Located in the heart of Târgu Jiu, the project enjoys a unique positioning on the Brâncuși Axis, implicitly being part of the UNESCO Heritage. The existing construction on the land was built by Gheorghe Câlniceanu in 1896. Over time, it remains almost unchanged, undergoing only modifications due to the deterioration of the structural and finishing elements. The project's purpose is to align with the current collective living standard, taking care to preserve the connection with the street. By stepping back from the existing pediment, but also by detaching from the ground, the insertion makes a reverent gesture towards the weight of the past. The approach relies on the relationship created between the pediment of the Câlniceanu House and the public space for over 100 years. As a result, the area of the old house becomes the commercial space, already known to passersby, which allows entry into an interior previously only suspected. The approach is generally condescending, inclined towards preserving the memory of the place.

Situated in the urban core of Târgu Jiu, the project occupies a privileged position along the monumental Brâncuși Axis, embedding itself within an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage context. The site is anchored by an existing historic residence built by Gheorghe Câlniceanu in 1896—a volume that has endured largely unaltered over the century, bearing only the patina and natural decay of its tectonic envelope and finishes. The architectural intent introduces contemporary standards of collective dwelling while rigorously preserving and honoring the civic relationship with the street. By stepping back from the historic gable and deliberately lifting away from the ground plane, the new intervention performs a reverent spatial gesture toward the weight of the past. The conceptual approach capitalizes on the dialogue forged over more than a century between the Câlniceanu House facade and the public realm: the historic volume is reclaimed as a porous commercial plinth, inviting passersby into an interior domestic realm previously only glimpsed from the sidewalk. The intervention is shaped throughout by deference, restrained scale, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the collective memory of the site.
